ILLUSTRATE  ANCIENT  THAI  SILK'S  DESIGNS  FOR  �MUDMEE�  TEXTILES

MUDMEE� textiles have been well-known the world over for a long time. First, skeins of silk thread are bleached and sun-dried. The thread is then tied with strings, which are referred to in Thai as �MUDMEE�. Then it is dyed and tied and dyed several more times. The strings are afterward untied and the thread wound on spools, ready for weaving.  The beautiful designs are created by the one who tied the thread.


 

MI LOT (Lao Phuan or Tai Phuan)

A solid ikat pattern throughout the pha sin


 

MI PIANG (Lao Phuan or Tai Phuan)

A striped ikat pattern with plain bands alternating with ikat


 

MI TA (Lao Phuan or Tai Phuan)

A striped ikat pattern with small bands of coloured yarns and twisted two-coloured yarns or tiny ikat dot stripes alternating with the main ikat bands.


 

MI WONG (Lao Phuan or Tai Phuan)

Ikat pattern woven with two or four shed of plain colour dispersed throughout the design after each four yarns of ikat to give the pattern a scattered structure


 

MI  HOL

 

A silk weft ikat tubeskirt, called chong hol in Khmer , woven in a three shaft twill by ethnic Khmer in the lower northeast of Thailand.


 

AM PROM

 

Khmer. A tubeskirt made in silk with tiny double Ikat dots. The main colour is red with white ikat and green stripes. There were used as a tubeskirt for women.
